Sri Lanka experienced a significant boost in foreign exchange revenue from tourism in April 2024, reaching $225.7 million, marking a notable 52 percent increase compared to the previous year, according to the central bank citing tourism promotion authorities. This surge in revenue accompanied a substantial rise in tourist arrivals, which soared by 78 percent to 784,651 individuals during the first four months of the year. Specifically, April witnessed a 41 percent increase in arrivals, totaling 148,867 visitors. The earnings from tourism for April alone amounted to $225.7 million, a notable rise from $148.2 million recorded in the same month the previous year. These positive trends have contributed significantly to Sri Lanka's overall foreign exchange inflow, which reached $1,251.6 million in the first four months of 2024, marking a remarkable 92 percent increase compared to the corresponding period in 2023. This data, estimated from a survey conducted by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, has also had a positive impact on the country's imports and merchandise trade deficit, gradually mitigating it as tourism earnings increased and individuals within the sector spent their wages and other earnings.
