As of June 2024, Sri Lanka's external debt stood at $37.5 billion, according to the Mid-Year Fiscal Position Report. In the first half of 2024, the country made debt service payments totaling $503 million, including $275.1 million in principal and $227.9 million in interest. Since the implementation of an interim debt standstill policy on 12 April 2022, which suspended external debt servicing on loans from bilateral and commercial creditors, unpaid debt service has accumulated to $8.19 billion—comprising $5.67 billion in principal and $2.52 billion in interest—by June 2024.
