Per capita debt hits Rs. 1.3 m
  • Sri Lanka's public debt reached Rs. 29,150 billion in 2023, a 6.47% increase from 2022, with per capita debt rising to Rs. 1.32 million due to significant domestic and foreign borrowings.

As of 31 December 2023, Sri Lanka's total public debt surpassed Rs. 29,150 billion, reflecting a 6.47% increase compared to 2022, according to the Auditor General’s Department. The government secured Rs. 831,951 million in foreign loans and Rs. 7,541,282 million through treasury bills in 2023, with domestic and foreign borrowings collectively increasing by 67.4% year-on-year. This surge also raised the per capita debt value to Rs. 1,322,793, up by Rs. 88,435 (7.16%) from Rs. 1,234,358 in 2022.
