Customs up for historic Rs. 1.5 t revenue with strong finish to 2024
  • Sri Lanka Customs is on track to achieve a record Rs. 1.53 trillion in revenue for 2024, driven by strong imports of petroleum, cigarettes, steel, and appliances, enhanced tax collection mechanisms, automated risk management, and improved transparency and efficiency despite challenges like reduced vehicle imports.

Sri Lanka Customs is poised to achieve a record-breaking revenue of Rs. 1.53 trillion in 2024, a significant 46% increase from last year’s Rs. 970 billion, with Rs. 1.41 trillion already collected as of mid-December. Director General Sarath Nonis attributes this performance to strategic planning, enhanced operational efficiency, technological innovation, and transparency, despite challenges like reduced vehicle imports, which now contribute less than 6% of revenue. Key drivers include imports of petroleum, cigarettes, steel, and electric appliances, alongside improved tax collection mechanisms, automated risk management, and a strengthened code of conduct to combat corruption and minimize system leakages. The achievement underscores the Department’s commitment to setting new benchmarks in revenue collection and efficiency.
