Government Expenditure on Samurdhi Payments

In 2020,the government spends LKR 52.5 billion on Samurdhi Relief Payments– the single largest welfare program for the people in poverty. Government expenditure on Samurdhi increased significantly in 2015 as the amount of allowances for a beneficiary was increased.

Samrudhi relief is currently distributed among 1.8 million beneficiaries in Sri Lanka as of 2020.

In 2020 the government spends 0.35% as a share of GDP on Samurdhi relief payments. Even in 2006, the government spent 0.37% on Sumurdhi payments, however overtime Sumurdhi payments did not increase in line with GDP until 2015.

In 2020, the government spends on average LKR. 2,428 as Samurdhi Payment per family.
