Contributors to Rising Inflation

Sri Lanka has seen a trend in rising inflation, with inflation reaching double digits in December 2021 at 12.1%. This is the first time Sri Lanka has reached double digit inflation since January 2009. The above infographic shows the major contributors to the increase in inflation in Sri Lanka.

Initially the uptick in inflation from mid-2021 was largely due to supply driven factors such as rising prices of food & beverages and fuel. However, in the latter part of 2021 and in January 2022 contribution to inflation became broader based beyond supply driven factors.

It is important to note that the percentage increases depicted in this infographic are based on the increase in inflation index level compared to January 2021, so will not be exactly the same as the point-to-point inflation figures published as headline inflation by the Department of Census & Statistics. Furthermore, the percentage increases in this infographic are not weighted. Therefore, some categories with relatively small weightage in the overall inflation basket may have high percentage increases in price levels (eg. Restaurants & Hotels). The weight of each item is given in the table below:
